Every day brings more evidence of the United States’ profound political polarization. The 2020 presidential campaign will only further intensify the country’s partisan. President Trump’s critics see him as crass, loud and uninformed. Our President does not care what his critics think as long as he gets results. Here in Santa Maria where I have lived since 2005, a town now of 107,000 people, the poverty rate has come down almost 3 points since President Trump began his term. The poverty rate here has declined from 20.6% in 2016 to 18% today. This makes an important point. The Democratically-controlled California legislature has passed dozens of legislative measures for years that seek to alleviate the effects of California’s embarrassingly high poverty with no effect and yet it is President Trump’s economic policies that have provided action on poverty at the sources.
